Milk (and cheese) from grass

One of the highlights of the spring, in fact THE highlight of spring, on a dairy farm is getting the cows out to grass. It all depends on the weather. After being waterlogged all winter it takes several sunny days before the ground will support a herd of high spirited cows stepping gaily across it.
This years exceptional  warm dry weather meant they we able to go out to grass on 19th March by day. And the following week it was warm enough to have them out by night as well.
This is about 4 whole weeks earlier than usual, which was a relief for all of us as the silage had just about run out.
